Spectral Sensing and Imaging

CPI’s innovations come from our experts in the fields of physical science, mathematics, optical engineering and information technology. Practical experience and scientific depth enable us to innovate rapidly and creatively to meet the challenges that our customers face in manufacturing, imaging and non-contact sensing processes in both commercial and scientific applications.

Acquired by CPI in 2016, CPI New England (formerly known as Spectral Sciences Incorporated or SSI) is responsible for CPI’s spectral sensing and imaging, building on the foundation that SSI established over their 20+ year history.  CPI New England integrates innovative electro-optic technology into mechanically robust, low power consumption, frequency-agile systems for imaging, defense, telecommunication and scientific research applications. CPI New England specializes in the fabrication of both classic Air-Gap Fabry-Perot Interferometers and next-generation Liquid Crystal Fabry-Perot (LCFP) tunable optical filters. This team was also responsible for the flight optics for the SENSE mission.

About Spectral Sensing and Imaging

The CPI New England facilities include office space, modern fully-equipped optical science laboratories, and a certified Class-1000 clean-room. The staff includes observational space, atmospheric and planetary physicists that collectively bring together more than 50 years of hands-on Fabry-Pérot, remote sensing and spectroscopy experience. In addition to its award-winning products, CPI New England provides a range of photonics services including optical system design, spectroscopic consulting, and optical coating design.

This team pioneered the development of highly automated Doppler imagers, capable of remotely sensing dynamical properties of the upper atmosphere and currently operates and maintains four Doppler imagers.  One of the imagers resides at the Arecibo Observatory and two at the MIT Haystack/Millstone Hill Observatory. These instruments measure neutral velocity and temperatures in the upper and lower thermosphere, and hydrogen and helium dynamics in the exosphere. Dr. John Noto

Spectral Sensing and Imaging Lead

Dr. John Noto serves as the CPI New England Vice President.  He founded Scientific Solutions, Inc. in 1995.   Dr. Noto received a B.S. in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Rochester, an M.S. in Physics from Tufts University, and a Ph.D. in Astronomy/Space Physics from Boston University. He has more than 25 years of experience in optical research and development, focused on narrow-band spectroscopy and interferometry.






Dr. Robert Kerr

Chief Scientist

Dr. Robert Kerr serves as Chief Scientist at CPI.  Formally, he was an owner of SSI since 1997, serving originally as Director of Research. Dr. Kerr received a B.S. in Physics from Ohio University in 1979, an M.S. in Atmospheric Science from The University of Michigan in 1981, and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from the University of Michigan in 1986. Dr. Kerr was a member of the technical staff at the Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, CA in 1987, and was a professor of Astronomy at Boston University from 1988 to 1997. He has served as Director of Aeronomy at the NSF and Director at the Arecibo Observatory.
